Not taking them *quite* yet, but in case you were planning on literally flushing 20 bucks down the shitter this week because you didn’t need it, i am offering an alternative method of disposal!

This family is so cute I could die. Literally the only thing that could make these three cooler would be if they balanced their rock ‘n roll lifestyle with doing some vampire hunting on the side. Moms in black, daughter in a pink tutu.

Rah continued to work as I went to recombobulate. When I came back, the Boot had become remarkably Boot-shaped:

Rah’s in very good spirits. The drilling and screwing and caulking has been falling together fast.

These parts were put together as I wrote up the last post. Here’s what’s happening now:

The window frames are caulked and setting…

The door has been hinged, handled, and its lock has been put in,

Rah is a doofus,

And one end of the boot has been completed. Rah tells me she’s slowing down a bit for the night but before she goes, she would like to get the door, inside panels, and roof on. That would leave only the sink, windows, wheels, and paint job for tomorrow.

She has NOT eaten yet, save for cookies and chocolate and grapes. And she does make the convenient argument that she didn’t really get started today until noon. So I am going to go make a dinner run and bring something hot back for her while she gets back to drilling. She has requested a microwave pizza.

Microwave pizza it is.

Last night, Rah hit her biggest wall of frustration with the missing drill-bit. Today, I hit mine when we learned that the Boot must be colored in a bright and merry way, and therefore a clear design for the painting job must be made. I had misunderstood the conversation unfolding in front of me between Deberah and Rah as an official approval of the goldfish design she had whipped up during our plane ride over.

What had actually happened was Rah showing that she’d had some ideas in mind, and Deberah telling Rah what kind of color scheme we could expect the boot to be living in during the convention. And so the task of designing what would go on the Boot had been left in my capable hands.

…HUH?

To explain my dismay in full, I must tell you the story of the Stupid Unicorn Boot. Rah had explored the possibility of a boot with a canvas roof and pockets for tiny gardens for her Pre-Thesis boot (the first prototype) and her second boot (the one being done for Thesis proper) was built concurrently. (The project at Sunnyside resulted in a charming gray elephant and a striking white boot with red circles and black diagonals. Sadly, no footage of the last boot was taken.)

This boot was painted ultramarine, brought into the PNCA Commons, and there Rah left out bright red + yellow paints and invited her contemporaries to leave their handprints. The colors of the boot were marvelous, and the handprint design was striking. However, someone decided to doodle a large unicorn on one side of the Boot in bright pink paint-marker. A really lazy doodle too, like something you’d sign a yearbook with. Not something you’d paint on a person’s home. Rah was appalled.

In fact, the Unicorn was so upsetting to her that when we dragged the Boot across town on last-minute notice, (breaking one of the front castor wheels in the process and having to maneuver it the rest of the way on our backs) she was adamant about positioning the boot in such a way that the offending scrawl would be hidden from view, at the expense of properly stabilizing the Boot’s wounded flank.

…And um. She wanted me to take over designing the paint job. Just, handed it over to me and went back to drilling. I wasn’t expecting that! With Carolyn as witness in the room opposite ours, I first tried to deal with my discomfort by making a loud, angry joke about the Stupid Unicorn Boot that fell flat, because Rah almost took me seriously. In the subdued silence afterward, I sketched out a Boot template, and then Rah came over and helped me try to sort through why I was suddenly bitter and sullen about Deberah’s insistence on a bright, eye-catching paint-job.

In the end, it boils down to two things: a) I was very scared that I would design something, Rah would react to it like she had the Unicorn, and I would not be emotionally secure enough to take the idea of her questioning my capability at a task she had asked me to do gracefully…because b) My hormonal stability has been compromised this week. I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of taking a sharp object with me on the plane, and the mood-shift has hit.

Mood shifts, I am grateful to say, are a thing I do know some remedies for. I still feel very foolish and hope I didn’t hurt anyone’s feelings, but I worked out something that Rah is happy with.

And then I went to go take a walk…and wound up comfort shopping a little. Some things for Rah…

And some things for me.

I feel much better now.
